Psychology students where hosted by The Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe at their annual Brain Day on 18 June 2019.

Visiting lecturer, Dr Guy Sutton, Director, Medical Biology Interactive & Honorary Consultant Assistant Professor, University of Nottingham Medical School presented lectures on Neurobiology and the opportunity to observe brain dissection.  The lectures provided students with up to date research in the field of brain anatomy, functioning, neuroplasticity and neurobionics.  Students explored the concepts of lateralisation and localisation and viewed case studies to consider the existence of the criminal brain.

Students were invited to witness the dissection of a sheep’s brain during a laboratory session.  Dr Sutton explained and key core structures and similarities to a human brain throughout. Students were also able to hold the cerebellum, hemispheres and meninges.

The final session focused on the ‘Shattered Mind’, considering the biological aetiology of Schizophrenia, symptoms and drug therapy.  The diagnostic process within psychiatry was also explained to students and allowed them to consider the ethics surrounding mental illness.

Students felt they had all taken away at least one concept from the event that helped them to comprehend the working of the human mind.
